Apple Week TwoApple week mixed in with a little bit of The Little Red Hen. Morning Work TimeMorning work time is something that is new to me this year and all I have to say about it is what was I waiting for. Group TimeOur Morning Messages are in full swing now that the school year is moving along. With a large group of children and a very mixed age group (2yrs 9mo to 5yrs) we have to take baby steps in the duration of our group meetings. Adding more elements as we go. For example we sang the ABC song for days and weeks before we started talking about letters at group time. Extending the duration of group time a little bit at a time until we reached our goal of a 15 min to 20 min group meeting time. We added our apple graphing to our work time learning centers, but before we placed it in the environment we had a group discussion on the smart board about the purpose and reasoning behind graphs. Work Time (Learning Centers)![]() Children worked and collaborated together as they sorted real apples on life size floor graph. They recorded their findings on a graph sheet. ![]()
![]() Children cut and sliced apples one day and made apple sauce with all of the cut up apples. The following day children used the left over apple to create apple crisp pies. Each child followed simple recipe cards to make their own pies. I was so excited to capture this little learning working on making the letter A in the art studio. It makes my heart sing when they discover all on their own the importance of letters. Our a apple art and coffee filter art has found it's way to the apple tree. It make a stunning display hanging all together. Small Group Activities![]() Children worked on syllables with this fun Say It, Clap It, Snap It activity. Children worked together identifying picture cards and clapped together to find which chicken coop the chick belonged in. Counting apples 1 2 3 with these fun apple counting mats. ![]() Children used dot stickers with the Capital letter written on them to peel, stick and match. (sorry no picture) ![]()

Picking Apples 1 2 3Morning Work TimeThis year I add to my plans a morning work time. I have to say that it has been a great addition to our morning routine. More on that later. We have been introducing our younger friends to letters with these fun race track letter mats. Children get to use a small toy car to drive on the letter and then sorts car letters under each letter. Our older friends have been mastering their number skills with apple sorting number mats. These mats have several different activities that can be done.
Group TimeWork Time (Learning Centers)During work time children strung beads, drift wood, buttons, red bottle tops and silk leaves. We used their stringing's to create a child created apple tree. This potted tree is out all year long and changes with the seasons. Children used their fine motor skills to make lower case a apples. Children had a good time exploring weights with the activity, What Weighs More than an apple. We took the opportunity to do some of our assessments for the DRDP with this activity. ![]()

Allowing the teacher time to greet each child as they come into the classroom. Group TimeWe wrapped up our digestive system last week and started our study about our heart and lungs with a group discussion about what they thought our heart and lungs are for. Then we did a little reading. Pocket Chart Our Five SensesGrab it here for FREE Work Time (Learning Centers)Children used hand mirrors to view the details of their face and they drew themselves with a sharpie marker. After completing the drawing they used liquid water colors to finish their self-portrait. In the science center children mastered their skills of the skeletal system with a child size floor puzzle. Some of the children graduated from the doll heads to pretending to style one another's hair. Working on cutting skills in the sensory table with paper stripes.
Small Group ActivitiesChildren learn to talk about emotions with this fun dominoes game using children's faces with different emotions. Flip and draw a emotion. Play dough mats are my little ones top choice when they are out and these All About Me play dough mats are no exception. Preschool Cooking ProjectThis cooking project will go down in the book again for next year. The children enjoyed it, the teachers enjoyed it for it's health value. It was a win, win on both sides.
